A free online calculator gives a generic decibel-reduction claim for a product. This is a real ISO 9613-2 barrier design, run against the actual road, geometry and boundary in front of you, and labelled as a modelled estimate every time.
- A fence only cuts noise with mass and continuity, not height alone — roughly 12 kg/m² or more, no gaps or slots, sealed as the timber weathers. The design report specifies this, so you're not guessing at spec either.
- Permitted development in England generally allows up to 2 metres (1 metre next to a highway) without planning permission — the report flags when a recommended height would need an application, before your customer commits.
- Where the fence sits on or near a shared boundary, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 can apply separately from planning permission — the report flags this too, though your customer should take their own advice before starting work.

What the design report actually specifies
Height, length — with returns down each side so sound can't simply go round the ends — and position relative to the boundary. Not a product spec sheet; a design for this plot.
Illustrative example — a real design is run against the actual plot, road geometry and terrain, with a sensitivity table showing what each extra half-metre of height buys.
It will occasionally cost you a job.
The report is honest. If a fence will not help, it says so. You will lose the odd sale — and win the ones where the customer was going to walk anyway, because you were the firm that told them the truth. Trust closes more jobs than optimism.
And it usually specifies returns.
Because it is modelled properly, the design nearly always calls for short returns down each side of the fence — sound travels around the end of a barrier the way light bends round a corner, so a run that stops short of the boundary gives up most of what the main panel achieves. Quoting to the full design, returns included, is what keeps the finished job matching the performance the assessment modelled, instead of a shorter run that leaves a customer disappointed it doesn’t work as well as expected. It does mean more linear metres than a bare perimeter quote — but now that’s a documented part of the spec, not an upsell.

Is a white-labelled report the same assessment as a report bought directly?
Yes -- every Trade Licence report runs the same ISO 9613-2 methodology and the same national datasets as a report bought directly from AcoustaPLOT. White labelling changes the branding on the PDF, not the modelling behind it.
What if the report says a fence won't help much -- do I still pay for it?
Yes -- it's a report like any other, charged at your trade price either way. That's deliberate: a report that tells your customer the truth, including when the honest answer is "this won't help much", is what makes the ones that do recommend work credible -- and it saves you quoting, or building, something that was never going to satisfy them.
Do I need my own professional indemnity insurance to give this to a customer?
AcoustaPLOT's report carries its own stated scope and limitations (a modelled estimate, not a measured survey) -- but you're the one presenting it as part of your own quote or proposal, so whether you need PI cover for that is a question for your own insurer, not something this page can answer for your business.
Does the barrier design account for planning permission limits?
Yes -- permitted development in England generally allows a garden fence up to 2 metres (1 metre where it's next to a highway used by vehicles), and the design report flags when its recommended height would exceed that and need an application. Rules vary locally, especially in conservation areas, so always confirm with the council before relying on permitted development alone.
How is this different from what I could offer with a free online calculator?

The 5% band starts straight away; the 12% and 25% bands are subject to a quick business check, and until yours is approved, reports are charged at 5%. Nothing requiring a site visit is sold at trade prices — measured surveys are quoted individually and referred out.
All prices are the total you pay. ACOUSTAPLOT LTD is not currently registered for VAT, so no VAT is added and there is nothing to reclaim.
Worth knowing before you sign up: our duty of care runs only to the Trade Licence holder — you — not to your own customers or anyone else you pass a report on to. If a customer of yours needs their own assurance about it, that’s something you arrange with them; we don’t currently hold professional indemnity insurance that extends to them.
