Rail noise is different from road noise
Railway noise comes in relatively short, intense events — a passing train — separated by quiet, rather than the continuous drone of a busy road. People often find the pattern easier or harder to live with than road noise depending on frequency and timing, particularly at night for freight and early services.

The key factors are the number of train movements per day, the type of trains (high-speed, regional, freight), their speed, and your distance from the track. Freight and high-speed services tend to be the loudest. Night-time movements matter disproportionately because of sleep disturbance.

Defra's strategic noise maps cover major railways (broadly those with high annual movements) and present rail noise separately from road noise. Where your home falls within that coverage, a mapped value exists.
