Road noise and sleep: what the research actually says

Research consistently shows that night-time traffic noise affects sleep even when it does not fully wake you. The body responds to noise events with micro-arousals, shifts to lighter sleep stages and increased movement — disruption you may not remember in the morning but which still degrades sleep quality.

The relevant metric is Lnight, the average noise level between 23:00 and 07:00. The WHO identifies it as the key indicator for sleep-related health effects.

What the guidelines say

The WHO's 2018 Environmental Noise Guidelines recommend keeping road-traffic Lnight below 45 dB, noting that above this level adverse effects on sleep become more likely. BS 8233 recommends internal bedroom levels around 30 dB LAeq at night for good sleep.

The gap between outdoor and indoor levels depends heavily on glazing and whether windows are open — which is why ventilation matters as much as the window itself.

Longer-term health associations
